Dubai, UAE: UAE residents could enjoy a five-day break for Eid Al Etihad, the country’s National Day celebrations, by using just one day of annual leave, depending on the official holiday announcement.
Eid Al Etihad, also known as the UAE’s Union Day, is expected to fall on December 2 and 3, 2026. Although the official holiday dates have not yet been announced, the occasion usually falls on these dates, which are Wednesday and Thursday this year.
Take Friday Off for a Longer Holiday
With the two expected public holidays falling on Wednesday and Thursday, employees who take Friday, December 4, as annual leave could enjoy five consecutive days off, including the weekend of December 5 and 6.
However, the final break will depend on the official holiday announcement and any changes to the dates.
Under a UAE law passed in 2025, certain public holidays can be transferred to the beginning or end of the week when they fall mid-week, allowing residents to enjoy longer breaks alongside the weekend.
Although a transfer of the Eid Al Etihad holidays is considered unlikely, residents may receive an extended break if Friday is declared an additional holiday.
Some Employees May Get Five Days Off Automatically
Employees who follow a four-day working week, including some public sector employees in Sharjah, may automatically receive a five-day break when the holidays coincide with their usual weekend, without needing to use annual leave.
UAE Celebrates 55th Eid Al Etihad
Since 2024, the UAE’s National Day celebrations have been officially known as Eid Al Etihad, meaning “Celebration of the Union”.
The country will mark its 55th Eid Al Etihad in 2026. Coinciding with the UAE’s Year of Family, this year’s celebrations are expected to focus on the families, generations and communities that have contributed to the nation’s journey over the past 55 years.
Travellers Advised to Book Early
Residents planning to travel during the holiday period have been advised to make arrangements early, as airfares and accommodation costs are expected to rise closer to the dates.
According to a report by Khaleej Times, many travellers have already booked their trips to secure lower airfares and more affordable accommodation. Travel agents expect demand to increase as the holiday approaches.
Residents are advised to wait for the official public holiday announcement before finalising their leave plans.
