Dubai Event Cancelled as TEDx Organisers’ Licence Revoked Over $25,000 Speaker Fees

TED cancels Dubai TEDx event and revokes organiser’s licence after reports that speakers were asked to pay up to $25,000 for stage appearances.

TED launches investigation after reports of paid speaking slots at upcoming Dubai event

TED has cancelled a Dubai-based TEDx event and revoked its organiser’s licence following a report that uncovered how speakers were being asked to pay thousands of dollars for a chance to appear on stage.

The event was originally scheduled for October 16 at a five-star hotel in Dubai Marina, but was called off less than 72 hours after Khaleej Times revealed that some individuals were offering “guaranteed” TEDx appearances for fees of up to $25,000 through online payment platforms such as PayPal and Stripe.

TED confirmed it has launched an internal investigation, reiterating that TEDx events are non-commercial and volunteer-run, and that charging speakers violates its core principles.

Speakers Offered “Guaranteed Fame” for a Price

Several professionals told Khaleej Times they were approached by individuals offering paid speaking slots ahead of the event.

“I was quoted $15,000 for what they called a premium slot,” said one Dubai-based professional. “They promised local press coverage and an IMDb credit. I’m relieved I didn’t go ahead.”

Another business owner shared that he had received multiple messages on WhatsApp offering “TEDx fame” in exchange for quick payment.

Following the revelations, the organisers issued an apology and began refunding speakers who had already paid. Screenshots shared with the publication showed refunds being processed through payment gateways.

The organisers admitted to making a “serious mistake” and confirmed that they have returned to India, with their TEDx licence now revoked.

TEDx Community Condemns Misuse

The incident has drawn strong criticism from genuine TEDx organisers in the UAE.

Pooja Uni, executive director and chief curator of TEDx Happiness Street, said the story “hit home” for those who dedicate months to planning and coaching speakers without charging any fees.

“Scams like this erode public trust and hurt legitimate organisers who work purely out of belief in ideas, not transactions,” she said.

She urged aspiring speakers to verify event licences on TED.com and to avoid anyone offering paid speaking opportunities.
