Global: British actor Paapa Essiedu has revealed that he received racist death threats after being cast as Severus Snape in the upcoming HBO Max adaptation of the Harry Potter series.
The Olivier-nominated actor, known for his role in I May Destroy You, said he has faced disturbing online abuse since joining the highly anticipated project.
Actor Says Threats Have Been Targeted
Speaking to Deadline, Essiedu recalled receiving direct threats over his decision to take on the iconic role.
“I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he said.
The actor also described seeing threatening messages on social media, including people claiming they would come to his home and kill him.
Despite the abuse, Essiedu said he remains committed to portraying the complex character and sees the role as an opportunity to bring authenticity to the series.
Taking Over Snape Role
Essiedu will play Severus Snape, a character famously portrayed by the late Alan Rickman in the original Harry Potter films.
Warner Bros. Television plans for the new series to run over several years, meaning Essiedu could remain involved with the project for much of the next decade.
Acknowledging the scale of the commitment, the actor said his life could change significantly during the production.
“I’ll be 45 by the time I finish and I know my life is going to change in a big way,” he said.
Books Were Part of His Childhood
Essiedu said he grew up reading J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and viewed them as a form of escapism.
Now, despite the hostility surrounding his casting, he said the experience has strengthened his determination to approach the role seriously.
He also highlighted the potential impact of the series on young viewers who may see themselves represented in its world.
New Series Set to Launch Next Year
The upcoming Harry Potter adaptation is intended to revisit the original story in a long-form television format.
The series is expected to explore themes including love, acceptance and overcoming hatred, with Essiedu taking on one of the franchise’s most recognisable characters.
The new Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere next year.
