Amsterdam, Netherlands – Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS announced today that the Netherlands will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to compete. The decision comes amid ongoing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the erosion of press freedom.
Humanitarian Concerns Prompt Action
AVROTROS cited the “ongoing and severe human suffering in Gaza” as the primary reason for its decision. The broadcaster also expressed concerns about the Israeli government’s interference in previous editions of the contest, which it believes politicized the event and compromised its integrity.
Growing International Support for the Boycott
The Netherlands’ announcement follows similar statements from other European broadcasters. Ireland’s RTÉ, Slovenia’s RTVSLO, and Iceland’s RÚV have all indicated that they will not participate in Eurovision 2026 if Israel is included. Spain’s RTVE is also considering its position, with a final decision expected after the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) general assembly in December.
EBU’s Response
The European Broadcasting Union has acknowledged the concerns raised by its members and is in ongoing consultations regarding the participation criteria for Eurovision 2026. A final decision on Israel’s inclusion is expected to be made during the EBU’s general assembly in December.
