Sharjah Civil Defence has honoured a man for his heroic act in saving two young girls from drowning at Mamzar Beach on Tuesday, October 28.
The girls, both residents, were rescued after they were swept into deep waters near the shore. Following the incident, the Director-General of the authority and his deputy visited the two girls in hospital to check on their health as they recovered.
Authorities used the occasion to remind the public of the importance of adhering to beach safety rules and swimming only in designated areas.
Sharjah Civil Defence also announced plans to launch summer training programmes for school students, giving children hands-on experience with lifeguarding and rescue tools to promote early awareness of water safety.
In addition, the authority encouraged residents to participate in community initiatives to enhance safety across Dubai’s maritime sector, particularly during major events. Volunteers will be trained in marine rescue techniques and how to respond effectively to emergencies.
Mamzar Beach, shared by Sharjah and Dubai, has seen several incidents in recent years. In November 2024, a 15-year-old Indian expat drowned after being caught in strong currents, while in 2023, a man lost his life while trying to save his wife, who was successfully rescued by Sharjah authorities.
