Several beaches across the northern UAE have been temporarily closed following an oil spill from a tanker off the coast of Umm Al Quwain. The incident has prompted cleanup operations and raised concerns after residents reported strong fuel-like odours in different parts of the country.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) confirmed on October 23 that an oil spill had been detected. Authorities have launched containment and remediation measures to limit its impact on coastal areas and marine life.
What Happened?
The oil spill was detected off the coast of Umm Al Quwain, according to the ministry. Before the incident was confirmed, residents had reported a fuel-like smell for three days across different areas of the UAE.
Authorities had earlier said there was no cause for concern, but the ministry later linked the reported odour to the spill.
What Are Authorities Doing?
Containment, cordoning, cleanup and remediation operations began as soon as the spill was detected, the ministry said.
Umm Al Quwain Municipality confirmed that field operations are continuing to contain the spill and reduce its potential impact on marine life.
The ministry has urged fishermen and other sea users to follow official instructions and avoid fishing in affected waters while response operations continue.
Which Beaches Are Closed?
Authorities have announced temporary closures in several coastal areas:
- Umm Al Quwain: All beaches and coastal areas have been temporarily closed.
- Sharjah: Al Hamriyah Beach has been closed as a precaution.
- Ras Al Khaimah: The Public Services Department announced on Saturday that all beaches would remain closed until further notice.
The closures are intended to prevent further pollution risks and protect coastal areas while technical teams assess the situation.
What Should Residents Do?
Residents are advised to follow safety instructions issued by local authorities until further notice.
- Avoid affected beaches until they are officially reopened.
- Do not fish in waters affected by the spill.
- Follow updates from official government channels.
- Avoid spreading unverified information about the incident.
Authorities will determine when affected coastal areas can reopen based on assessments and cleanup progress.
Previous Oil Spill Incidents in the UAE
The UAE has experienced several oil spill incidents in recent years.
June 2025: The UAE Coast Guard rescued 24 crew members after the oil tanker Adalynn collided with the cargo vessel Front Eagle off Khor Fakkan in the Gulf of Oman. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure attributed the collision to a navigational misjudgment by one of the vessels. The incident caused minor damage to both ships and resulted in a small oil spill.
May 2025: Swimming was temporarily suspended at Al Zubarah Beach in Khor Fakkan following an oil spill. Authorities responded to the incident and contained the spill.
October 2024: An oil spill affected a beach near Snoopy Island in Fujairah, with hotels along Al Aqah Beach reporting the incident. Environmental authorities sent a response team to the area, and cleanup operations were carried out.
May 2022: Beaches in Fujairah and Kalba were closed following oil spills and reopened after cleanup operations were completed. Fishermen had alerted authorities to the pollution.
What Happens Next?
Beach closures will remain in place until technical teams complete their assessments and authorities determine that the affected areas are safe to reopen.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has said it will provide further updates on the incident and ongoing response efforts.
Residents, fishermen and beachgoers are advised to monitor official announcements for the latest information on coastal conditions and reopening decisions.
