Abu Dhabi, UAE: Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health (DoH) has revoked the licence of one physician and suspended another doctor’s licence over violations involving controlled medicines, citing the need to protect patient safety.
The authority announced the action on Wednesday, October 14, following breaches of regulations governing controlled medications.
According to the DoH, the violations included shortcomings in clinical assessment, patient follow-up and medical documentation. Authorities did not disclose further details about the cases.
What Are Controlled Medicines?
Controlled medicines are substances regulated by the UAE government because of their potential for misuse, abuse and dependence. Their import, export, distribution and use are subject to strict regulatory requirements.
These medicines fall into different categories, including narcotic and psychotropic substances, as well as semi-controlled medications.
Types of Controlled Medicines
Controlled medicines may include:
- Narcotics: Strong pain-relieving medicines such as morphine, codeine and fentanyl.
- Psychotropic substances: Medicines that affect mood, emotions and behaviour, including certain benzodiazepines, antidepressants and antipsychotics.
- Stimulants: Medicines used to treat conditions such as ADHD and narcolepsy, including methylphenidate and amphetamines.
- Sedatives and tranquillisers: Medicines used for anxiety and sleep disorders, including certain hypnotics and barbiturates.
UAE Approval Requirements
According to the information provided, residents, tourists and transit passengers must obtain prior approval through the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) website for controlled and semi-controlled medications.
The approval process typically requires supporting documents, including a prescription and a letter from a doctor. Non-controlled medicines and over-the-counter medications do not require this pre-approval.
The licensing action highlights the importance of complying with controlled-medicine regulations and maintaining proper clinical assessments, patient follow-up and medical records.
